Jan Dhan accounts crosses 50 crore mark, with 56 percent of them belonging to women;
The total number of Jan Dhan accounts has crossed the 50 crore mark. The Finance Ministry said, out of these accounts 56 percent of accounts belong to women and 67 percent of accounts have been opened in Rural and Semi-urban areas. The deposits in these accounts are more than two lakh crore rupees.Â
- The Ministry said, about 34 crore RuPay cards have been issued in these accounts free of cost. The average balance in Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana accounts is over four thousand rupees and more than five crore 50 lakh Jan Dhan accounts are receiving Direct Benefit Transfer benefits.
Assam: Guwahati’s LGBI airport becomes first in northeast to get ‘Digi Yatra’ facility
Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport became the first airport in the northeast region to get ‘Digi Yatra’ facility. The service will be available in three major areas of the airport, first entrance, check-in and boarding areas.
- Digi Yatra facility will currently be available only for Indigo and Akasa passengers at Guwahati airport, and soon will be offered by other airlines as well.
- Passengers will be able to register their documents on the ‘Digi Yatra’ app and enter the airport by scanning their faces. The gate will open as soon as the face will be recognised on the camera.Â
Centre approves release of Rs 200 cr to flood-hit Himachal Pradesh
The Centre approved the release of Rs 200 crore from the National Disaster Response Fund as advance assistance to Himachal Pradesh to help the rain-battered state undertake relief measures for affected people.Â
- A spokesperson of the Union Home Ministry said the Centre had earlier approved the advance release of Rs 360.80 crore from the central share of the State Disaster Response Fund in two instalments on July 10 and 17.
- The Central government also released Rs 189.27 crore of the state’s past dues from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) on August 7.Â

RBI issues revised guidelines for IDF-NBFCs
Infrastructure Debt Fund-NBFCs (IDF-NBFCs) will now be required to have a net owned fund (NOF) of at least Rs 300 crore, said the Reserve Bank’s revised norms for such entities issued.Â
- Besides, they should have a capital-to-risk weighted assets ratio (CRAR) of minimum 15 per cent (with minimum Tier 1 capital of 10 per cent).
- RBI said a review of the guidelines applicable to IDF-NBFCs has been undertaken in order to enable them play a greater role in financing of the infrastructure sector and to harmonise the regulations governing financing of infrastructure sector by NBFCs.

India’s Anahat Singh clinches gold in Asian Junior Squash
India’s Anahat Singh clinched the gold medal in the U-17 category of the Asian Junior Squash Individual Championships, held in Dalian, China from August 16-20.
- The 15-year-old Anahat defeated Hong Kong’s Ena Kwong 3-1 in the final to win the gold medal.She had beaten Malaysian players Doyce Lee and Whitney Isabelle Wilson in the quarterfinal and semifinal, respectively.
FIFA Women World Cup: Spain defeat England 1-0 to become world champions
In Football, Spain made history by defeating England 1-Nil to lift the FIFA Women’s World Cup title in Syndey for the first time.
- Captain Olga Carmona’s wonderful strike in the 29th minute proved to be the winner. England were dominant in their approach but Spain’s brilliant effort did not let them equalize as inch closer towards victory.
- Spain’s national football team, also known as La Roja became only the second country, after Germany, to win both the Men’s and Women’s World Cups.

INS Vagir sets new record for longest Scorpene Submarine Deployment
Indian Navy’s sub, INS Vagir, has achieved an astounding feat by setting an exceptional record for the longest deployment of a scorpene-class sub, covering 7,000 km to reach Australia for joint military exercises.
- This further marks the first deployment of Indian Scorpene subs to Australia, directed at participating in underwater drills with the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).
- Joining INS Vagir in the exercises will be the maritime patrol aircraft P-8I, the Indian and Australian navies, along with other Australian subs.
CM Eknath Shinde presents Maharashtra Government’s first ‘Udyog Ratna’ award for outstanding work in industry sector to veteran entrepreneur Padma Vibhushan Ratan Tata
Maharashtra Government’s first ‘Udyog Ratna’ award for outstanding work in the industry sector was presented to veteran entrepreneur Padma Vibhushan Ratan Tata by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.Â
- Chief Minister Shinde along with deputy chief ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar presented Mr. Ratan Tata with a cheque of Rs 25 lakh, a badge and a certificate of honour at his residence in Colaba, Mumbai. Industries Minister Uday Samant and Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar were also present on this occasion.
- Other awards: Udyog Mitra Award to Adar Punawala of Serum Institute, Udyogini Award to Gauri Kirloskar of Kirloskar Group and Best Marathi Entrepreneur Award to Vilas Shinde.
5 young Indians among 2023 International Young Eco-Hero award winners
Five youths from India have been named among 17 teen environmental activists from across the globe to receive the 2023 International Young Eco-Hero Award who have taken initiatives to tackle the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.Â
- The young eco-warriors who were recognised for their efforts by the US-based non-profit organisation, “Action For Nature”, are Eiha Dixit from Meerut, Manya Harsha from Bengaluru, Nirvaan Somany and Mannat Kaur from New Delhi and Karnav Rastogi from Mumbai.
- The International Young Eco-Hero Awards programme recognises and encourages children and teens from ages 8 to 16 who have taken action towards solving the most critical environmental issues.
